Now growth has waned and the town lacks sufficient new industry to provide jobs for the town’s youth. This film is a peek into the 1970’s in Smiths Falls.

NEW ADDITION
Traditional Algonquin Birch Bark Canoe Build
Smiths Falls District Collegiate Institute (SFDCI) Indigenous Studies Class initiated the building of birch bark with traditional Algonquin canoe builder Chuck Commanda. With schools closed during the pandemic, the canoe build site was moved to a rural property along Big Rideau Lake. The 10-day canoe build was recorded and condensed into a 4-minute video presented today. With the help of teachers Paul Merridew, Blake Seward, and Jamie Campbell, Chuck Commanda crafted a beautiful birch bark canoe. SFDCI students assisted Chuck in gathering birch bark and other materials during an earlier day trip to Algonquin Park.  The canoe is named “Osprey” to recognize the majestic bird that most days flew above the canoe build site.  Migwitch

Things to consider while enjoying Old Home Week!

Be sure to bring chairs, umbrellas, and small tents for sun coverage as shade is limited at most venues. Remember to carry reusable cups and bottles, and pack a bag to take your own waste, which will assist volunteers and staff with cleanup efforts. It is advisable to walk to the venues or utilize the shuttle service since parking for entertainers and accessible spots will be extremely limited. Support eco-friendliness by purchasing food and drinks in reusable containers, opting for glass or aluminum, and steering clear of plastics.
